Concept
After exploring some ideas in the computing and the arts program at UCSD, I always found myself coming back to the idea of technology being a ‘human extension’. For example, the food that we consume may not be possible without the development of today’s agricultural technology including moisture sensors, automated harvesters, and autonomous tractors. In order to be an efficient member of society today, it is almost impossible to not rely on technology. Especially with communications being done with the help of computers, it is starting to become visible that technology has become more and more inseparable from human beings.
One of the traditions that I am extremely inspired by from my Japanese upbringing is Bonsai art.
I want to explore the concept of technology being part of human nature (something that we adapted due to survival of the fittest) by adapting computing arts technologies on bonsai art. I want to create a VR/3D modeled space where the user can ‘experience’ the bonsai art rather than visually seeing them. To emphasize and highlight the computing aspect, I think that it may be interesting to play with the size, texture, and movement of the bonsai as it is something that can only be done with technology.
The project: Non-traditional Tech-Bonsai Art world
Goals: Explore the concept of technology as the human extension through contemporary bonsai art.
How: 3D modeling software (Blender)

- Bonsai is an ancient Japanese art form that uses horticulture methods and techniques to produce small trees in containers that take the shape and scale of full-size trees over time. The word 'Bonsai' literally translates to 'planted in a container.’(definition from fnp.com)
